The port's strategic direction is established through a series of documents and political decisions that together set the framework for how Aabenraa Port develops – both as a commercial port, collaboration partner and local stakeholder:

The Ownership Strategy (2019) describes Aabenraa Municipality's overall expectations for the port's role, economy and development direction.

Development Plan 2055 (2024) is the board's course for the long-term development of the port areas and the prioritization of investments in infrastructure and green transition.

Section 17, subsection 4 committee work (2024) has provided a series of political recommendations on how urban development and port operations can go hand in hand around the areas by Kilen.

National interests – in October 2025, Danish commercial ports were designated as national interests.

Aabenraa Municipality adopted the latest ownership strategy for Aabenraa Port in 2019.
